Our department has added a new one to its scientific achievements. Three different student projects, prepared under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Selahattin Satılmış, one of our department’s faculty members, have been awarded funding within the scope of the TÜBİTAK 2209-A Research Project Support Programme for Undergraduate Students.
Our students, who earned the TÜBİTAK support, presented the titles, scopes, and methodologies of their projects at an event held in our department’s seminar hall. In the seminar, which was attended by faculty members and students, fires in the Ottoman era and their reflections in the press of the period were thoroughly discussed.
The project titles and researchers, supervised by Prof. Dr. Selahattin Satılmış, which will shed light on Ottoman social history and press history, are as follows:
İrem Altuğ: "Fires in the Ottoman Empire According to Newspapers (1831-1855)"
Demet Akkuş: "Fires in the Ottoman Geography According to the Tercümân-ı Hakikat Newspaper (1878-1883)"
Sevda Nur Zorba: "Fires in the Ottoman Lands According to the İkdam Newspaper (1894-1898)"
Making an evaluation after the seminar presentations, project advisor Prof. Dr. Selahattin Satılmış highlighted the importance of undergraduate students turning towards scientific projects. Satılmış stated, "It is highly valuable for our students to conduct research projects by receiving support from prestigious institutions like TÜBİTAK even before they graduate, both for their own academic development and for the scientific productivity of our department. I wholeheartedly congratulate our students who will examine fires—one of the greatest disasters in the social and urban history of the Ottoman Empire—through the rich press archives of the period."
As the Chair of the Department of History, we congratulate our esteemed faculty member Prof. Dr. Selahattin Satılmış, who made us proud, and our beloved students İrem Altuğ, Demet Akkuş, and Sevda Nur Zorba, whose projects were accepted, and we wish them continued success in their studies.
