Aksaray University (ASU), Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of History continues its scientific activities and academic knowledge sharing without slowing down. Within the scope of the studies carried out under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Selahattin Satılmış, one of our department’s faculty members, our undergraduate and graduate students shared their research topics with the audience in our department’s seminar hall.
In the first part of the seminar programme, our undergraduate students took the stage as part of the "Seminar II" course. In the presentations, which shaped around the theme of "fires"—a topic of great importance for Ottoman social and urban history—our students shared their remarkable findings based on archival and press research.
In this context;
İrem Altuğ addressed one of the greatest urban disasters of the period in depth with her presentation titled "The 1841 Izmir Fire";
Demet Akkuş presented her study titled "Fires in the Ottoman Geography According to the Tercümân-ı Hakikat Newspaper (1878-1883)". This study presented by our student Demet Akkuş also forms the basis of her successful project, which was recently awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 2209-A programme.
In another important part of the programme, a student from the History Department Graduate Education Programme made a presentation. Graduate student Muhammet Mert Ergün delivered a comprehensive presentation titled "Great Istanbul Fires". Explaining the historical fires that left deep traces on the physical, social, and economic structure of Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and the effects of these fires on urban memory, Ergün's presentation was followed with great interest by the participants.
The seminar programme, which also included a Q&A session with the participation of faculty members and students, contributed to the development of students' academic presentation skills and their thesis/project processes.
As the Chair of the Department of History, we congratulate our esteemed faculty member Prof. Dr. Selahattin Satılmış, who led our students to adopt a scientific research culture at an early stage, and our students İrem Altuğ, Demet Akkuş, and Muhammet Mert Ergün, who stood out with their successful presentations, and we wish them continued success in their studies
